Summary

Abandoned at ten years old by a mother who wanted to start a new family with her drug-addicted, abusive boyfriend, Danielle was raised by grandparents who thought their child-rearing days had ended in the 1960s。 She grew up Black and weird, before weird was cool, in a mostly white neighborhood in upstate New York, which created its own identity crises。 Under the eye-rolling, foul-mouthed, loving tutelage of her unapologetic grandmother—and the horror movies she obsessively watched—Danielle grew into a tall, awkward, Sassy-loving teenager who wore black eyeliner as lipstick and was struggling with the aftermath of her mother's choices。 But she also learned that she had the strength and smarts to save herself: her grandmother gifting her a faith in her own capabilities that the world would not have most Black girls believe。

I would love to come to a family gathering!

A solid 4。5! A fascinating and beautiful memoir about Dani overcoming so much adversity in her young life and finding her own path。 Also, a love letter to her grandmother, a woman beyond comparison who fought like hell for her grandkids。 I hope there's a follow-up in the future so we get to learn more about the latter part of the author's fascinating life。 A solid 4。5! Danielle Henderson is hilarious even when relating the heartbreaking stories of her youth。 Abandoned by her mother, Henderson was raising by her grandmother, a character if there ever was one, in a mostly white small town in New York。 Henderson shows how these women shaped her, along with a cool aunt and handful of oddball but ultimately loving family members。 She also finds the joy of reading, music and finding her own amazing voice。 If I have one complaint, it was too short! I 💕 memoirs! Thank you Danielle for sharing such intimate experiences。 I can only imagine how you must have felt growing up without the woman you longed for so much, your Mother。 Your Grandmother did the best she could with what she had。 In the end, I had so many questions, but what comes to mind is Did you get the opportunity to rekindle the relationship with you Mom?

Beautifully written, deeply moving, takes you through the full spectrum of emotion and leaves you, ultimately, awakened and inspired。

Very entertaining author but this memoir didn't grab me。 I know from her online writing that she lived in Alaska, worked for TWOP (RIP) etc。 This barely scraped the surface of the first third of her very rough life, but wasn't so engaging that I wanted to read her next memoir。 Very entertaining author but this memoir didn't grab me。 I know from her online writing that she lived in Alaska, worked for TWOP (RIP) etc。 This barely scraped the surface of the first third of her very rough life, but wasn't so engaging that I wanted to read her next memoir。 。。。more

Very ReadableA story of triumph and resilience。 This book is sad and astounding, kind of like a black girl version of Educated。

Growing up is hard。 There are no ifs, ands or buts about。 Now add factors such as growing up black, female and without a mother。 a hard life but one that author Danielle Henderson demonstrates with strength in "The Ugly Cry," a memoir of resilience and inner strength。 Danielle's mother left her for an abusive boyfriend when the girl was only 10。 Her raising was left to her grandparents, especially her foul-mouthed, horror movie-loving grandmother。 She was a woman who never hesitated to say what Growing up is hard。 There are no ifs, ands or buts about。 Now add factors such as growing up black, female and without a mother。 a hard life but one that author Danielle Henderson demonstrates with strength in "The Ugly Cry," a memoir of resilience and inner strength。 Danielle's mother left her for an abusive boyfriend when the girl was only 10。 Her raising was left to her grandparents, especially her foul-mouthed, horror movie-loving grandmother。 She was a woman who never hesitated to say what she meant or do what was necessary to knock some sense into her granddaughter, neighbor or stranger。 With a well-written mix of humility, humor and survival, the author recounts the identity crisis of being a teenager in a mostly white neighborhood。 Without her family's often misguided, but always loving example, Henderson could have followed many paths, including one like her mother's self-destruction。 Instead, she learned to embrace her uniqueness, her inner strength, turning ugly cries into life-changing opportunities。ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for my opinion。 。。。more

Wonderful bookI came on this by accident。 From nearly the beginning it was a riveting story about poverty, abuse, and the redeeming love of the author’s grandmother。 As others have said, given its grim themes it’s an amazingly funny memoir。

A very well written memoir。Heartbreaking at times, but the author managed to bring out the humor here and there。A great reflection of the time period for me personally。

Joanne

Powerful and tough memoir about a girl surviving the fierce love of her hard-bitten grandmother after her mother abandons her。

This book! Memoir is my favorite genre and with a title like this, (so relatable), how could I resist? I think maybe I missing something… Her story seemed to sort of meander without purpose。 Trauma is handled in a way that feels strange。 The book was fine, but it wasn’t special。 To me。

Alyssa

I thought this booked glossed over too many of the important parts of her story in favor of the more “fun” stuff—growing up in the 80s, her grandmas quirks etc。 it just felt like she couldn’t really commit to sharing her story and her family so it was quick little bites that didn’t go deeper than her overly emotional wrap up sentence at the end of each chapter。 Found it unsatisfying。

Julia

I have never read so much cussing but everyone must read this! Ms Henderson is brutally honest, hysterically funny, and I just know everyone will root for her as I did。 Loved this memoir, as painful as it was at times。 Just read it

I love a good memoir and this one is definitely good! It was funny, engaging, and at times, heartbreaking。

Loved this one。 I love Danielle’s voice, she is hilarious。

The author managed to tell her story of abuse and abandonment with humor and without self pity。 As a woman who frequently berates herself for past parenting mistakes, memoirs like Danielle’s give me assurance that I wasn’t so bad after all。 Danielle’s endurance and persistence in overcoming the obstacles she faced is proof that circumstances can be used as an excuse or a motivator。

Deb Holden

Excellent memoir。 Funny and sad, sometimes at the same time。 Very well written。 I will look forward to hearing more about the author’s life。 Hope there is a sequel。

As a retired teacher, I often read books with the eye of a teacher and the characters as students。 The students who frustrate us the most are often the ones who need us the most。 Although Dani didn’t cause any problems at school, I’m sure her teachers had no idea what she faced when she went home each day。 Dani had an awful home life with her mother and the boyfriend。 She suffered through many years of depression because of the abuse she endured during her early childhood years。 Her spunky, “sai As a retired teacher, I often read books with the eye of a teacher and the characters as students。 The students who frustrate us the most are often the ones who need us the most。 Although Dani didn’t cause any problems at school, I’m sure her teachers had no idea what she faced when she went home each day。 Dani had an awful home life with her mother and the boyfriend。 She suffered through many years of depression because of the abuse she endured during her early childhood years。 Her spunky, “sailor-mouthed” grandma, ended up being her toughest critic yet constant loving supporter。 Dani's grandma helped her gain her independence and eventually her break away from this very dysfunctional family。 。。。more
